I lead our Recruitment & Admissions team; we oversee the marketing and attraction for prospective students, alongside the recruitment process and onboarding of new students.

Why did you choose the Dyson Institute?

I have over 15 years experience in student recruitment, ranging from university attraction, to high-volume corporate recruitment, to highly targeted technical recruitment for an innovative, fast-paced tech SME. The role at the Institute seemed like a perfect opportunity to draw upon all my experience and contribute to a pioneering institution which made higher education accessible, with employability at the core of its programme.

I strive to provide an excellent candidate experience, throughout the applicant journey, from enquiry and application to the day they join. I'm particularly passionate about ensuring our recruitment processes are fair and inclusive for all.

I lead the engineering workplace team, which includes managing Institute engineers, apprenticeship and professional development colleagues, to deliver the best student experience we can.

I completed my master’s degree in mechanical engineering at The University of Surrey, including an industrial placement year. While completing my placement at NI (providers of measurement, control and automation capability) I realised that the interface of Mechanical solutions with Electronics and Software was what I enjoyed working on. I didn’t want to be limited to pure mechanical engineering in my dissertation project, so I spent time identifying projects outside of my department to utilise a mixture of my Engineering skills, this resulted in working with the Surrey Space Centre on autonomous tracked vehicles traversing deformable terrain.

On completing my degree in 2013 I worked at an automation and control consultancy, developing solutions for a range of customers, including the TFL Victoria Line, Airbus safety systems, and RAL satellites. Relocating, I then worked at Renishaw, developing automated processes for extremely high precision production lines.

In 2016 I joined Dyson, working on verification of integrated electronics systems within our products. I developed architectures and reusable tools alongside producing complete test systems. My role utilised my variety of skills and required collaboration with teams across the business. I took on managing the Floorcare and Haircare Electronics Verification teams in 2019.

In 2022 I decided that I wanted a different challenge, and wanted the opportunity to focus on coaching and mentoring others more. At the very end of 2022 I joined the Institute, initially with a focus on Electronics before moving into my current role.

Why did you choose the Dyson Institute?

Participating in an industrial placement year during my studies, I completed my degree thinking that I had learnt more in my one year in industry then the four other years of taught content, on reflection, this was down to the experience of applying knowledge and seeing tangible outputs of my work. From my experiences, the application of knowledge is vital to becoming a successful engineer so I know first-hand how impactful the Institute’s approach to workplace learning is

Throughout my career I have always found gratification in mentoring and coaching others, I really value seeing others have those lightbulb moments. Working in a Dyson Engineering Team and hosting Undergraduates, Interns and Graduates, I enjoyed coaching and mentoring all colleagues in their learning and development. For Undergraduates at the Institute, I had seen the benefits the workplace aspect of the programme has on students understanding and application of engineering knowledge.

When I was looking for a new challenge at Dyson; mentoring, coaching, and learning were a big driver in my decision and at 5 years old I wanted to be a maths teacher, so it is nice to be fulfilling an aspect of my childhood dreams by supporting the education of others.

I joined the Dyson Institute in March 2022 and I oversee both the Project Management and Operations Teams.

Before joining the Institute, I spent 13 years in higher education, where I successfully delivered multiple European-funded projects. This experience led me to the University of Bristol's Faculty of Engineering, where I headed the Student Industrial Liaison Office. In this role, I developed industry partnerships and spearheaded the Faculty's Year in Industry scheme, taking it from concept to successful implementation.

Why did you choose the Dyson Institute?

The concept of the Institute excites me immensely. Breaking down barriers to accessing education while opening doors for young people to engage with world-leading engineers and cutting-edge technology is simply remarkable. When I joined the Institute, I was inspired to think about how I could leverage my skills and experience to contribute to such a transformative place.

Three years later, the Institute's unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence, with students at its heart, continues to inspire me and the way that I can continue to contribute to its success.

I am the Student Support Manager, and to oversee the student support services including Disability support, Safeguarding, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Sexual Violence Liaison Officers and the student support team.

I started my career for a research company, before transitioning into academia as a Registered University Teacher for the University of Plymouth. There, I lectured in Animal Science, specialising in Anatomy, Physiology, Behaviour, and Qualitative and Quantitative Methods. After five years, I moved into the Further Education (FE) sector, joining the management team of an Arts and Science department. In this role, I managed the student journey from a pastoral and intervention perspective and developed specialist academies to support students in accessing competitive universities and courses, including Oxbridge and Medicine.

After a decade, I transitioned to the charity sector as Head of Education for a hospice. In this capacity, I provided professional and academic training for regional NHS and private sector healthcare professionals in End of Life and Palliative Care, ranging from training days to Masters level study, and catering to a diverse audience from Healthcare Assistants (HCAs) to consultants.

With extensive experience in training staff to help individuals identify their priorities at the beginning and end of their adult lives, I decided to return to mainstream FE and Higher Education (HE). My commitment to helping others navigate life’s challenges and identify what is truly important motivated me to move into Safeguarding, alongside pastoral support and Executive coaching.

I advocate for the importance of self-care when supporting others, so in my spare time if I’m not with my children or three labradors, I enjoy singing for the Military Wives Choir, which has afforded me numerous exciting opportunities, including concerts and television appearances.

Why did you choose the Dyson Institute?

While supporting A-level students with their Higher Education applications, I became aware of the launch of the Dyson Institute and was inspired by its innovative approach to higher education. A fortunate move to Wiltshire coincided with an opportunity to join the Institute as a Student Support Advisor. My strong background in education, safeguarding, pastoral support, and coaching, combined with my belief in this educational model, made applying for the role an easy decision.

Since joining in June 2021, I have managed the student support provision at the Dyson Institute. I serve as the Designated Safeguarding Lead and Mental Health Lead, overseeing a team of student support advisors. Each team member is a qualified coach, bringing a wealth of expertise and diverse interests to enhance our services.
