Frequently asked questions
General
The Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology is unlike any other higher education institution.
We aim to develop the best engineers in the world by combining rigorous academic programmes with work on future Dyson products and real responsibility from day one. We embrace best practice for quality in learning and teaching, rigorously uphold academic standards and offer individualised experiences. Learning is embedded through tailored opportunities across Dyson’s global engineering teams and developing pioneering technologies with an international impact.
Studying while working isn’t easy, but with guidance from technical experts, passionate academics and an extensive wellbeing and development provision our student engineers are supported to thrive.
We offer more than an education, but the start of an accelerated international Dyson career.
The Dyson Institute is an independent higher education institution registered with the Office for Students. This means that your degree will be awarded by the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology.
Due to the strict levels of security required on site, unfortunately we’re unable to offer regular open days or site visits. We do hold online events; please refer to our events pages for more information.
Part of our recruitment process, namely the Assessment Days, are typically held on site at our campus in Malmesbury, Wiltshire. This means that if you reach this stage in our recruitment process, you’ll be able to visit and get more of a feel for both Dyson and the Dyson Institute. This will help you make an informed decision should you go on to receive an offer.
Undergraduate
An integrated master's (MEng) is a four-year degree that extends your studies to master’s level. It’s the highest award for undergraduate studies in engineering in the UK. An MEng degree (Level 7) is the level above a BEng qualification (Level 6). This allows for more in-depth learning and will also support you in your pursuit of a chartered engineer (CEng) status.
Professional registration, also known as chartership, is recognition of your engineering and technical competence, which has been independently assessed and is internationally recognised. There are three categories that you can apply for: Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
An accredited degree programme can help when you apply for EngTech, IEng or CEng status, as the content you learn has already been verified as relevant for the sector by the relevant Institute or awarding body.
We are working closely with the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) to accredit this MEng (Hons) Engineering programme. The course has been designed to meet the necessary requirements for accreditation.
You will still need to demonstrate skills and behaviours developed in the workplace, alongside an accredited degree.

There is no upper age limit for applicants to the Dyson Institute. Providing you meet the grade entry requirements and eligibility requirements, you are able to apply for the programme. However, we are unable to accept undergraduate applications from individuals who already hold a Level 6 qualification in engineering. Any qualifications achieved beyond leaving school will also need to be declared in the application form.
No, applications are made directly to the Dyson Institute, using an 'apply' link open on our website during the application window. This means that you can keep any UCAS applications running alongside your Dyson Institute application.
Yes, if you can obtain or already have the right to work (full-time) and study in the UK, you may be eligible to apply for this programme. Please refer to the eligibility information for more information on Right to Work requirements.
The Dyson Institute is typically unable to accept deferred entry so you would therefore need to apply in the year that you wish to enrol. If you have life commitments that prevent this, then please speak to our friendly admissions team. You can register your interest for applying in future years and we'll then be able to keep in contact with news, information and when future applications open.
All offers are conditional upon our grade requirements being met. We therefore cannot guarantee you a place if you do not meet the required grades. Please see our Admissions Policy for further information.
After joining the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology, you’ll be an employee at Dyson and a part-time student with the Dyson Institute.
In your first year, you’ll live on the Dyson campus in our purpose-built accommodation in Dyson Village. Your monthly rent (£650) will be deducted from your salary each month.
At the end of your first year, you’ll move out of your campus accommodation and into the surrounding area. There will be support and information on how to find somewhere to live and the process of renting, as well as an opportunity to work out who you might want to live with.
Dyson provides a bus service for all employees and there are routes from the Bristol, Bath, Chippenham, and Swindon areas.
Accommodation for your year abroad in Asia will be provided by Dyson.
You'll be expected to maintain normal office hours: typically 8:00–16:30, or 9:00–17:30 Monday to Thursday, finishing an hour earlier on Fridays. We have a vibrant campus, rich with activities and facilities, and all employees (including student engineers) work ‘onsite’.
There will be a number of rotations in Dyson engineering teams during the programme, so you’ll have the opportunity to experience different disciplines. In year four, you can choose elective modules that match your interests and we'll work with you to align your final workplace rotation and final year project alongside this (with business need also in consideration).
In year three of the programme you will spend 12 months in Asia. This will include time in Singapore at Dyson's Head Office, and will include rotations in offices of strategic importance, such as Philippines, Malaysia or China (placement will be based on business need at that time and will be subject to securing the necessary visas; you will be supported in this process by Dyson).
No, you will not require a student loan as there are no tuition fees for our programme. Where a first-year student is accommodated in the Dyson Village, the costs are deducted directly from their salary.
Yes. You'll start on a salary of £23,500 per annum, increasing each year. You’ll also be eligible for our staff bonus scheme and staff discounts. With no tuition fees, you could graduate debt-free.
If you leave before completion of the programme, so do not complete your degree, Dyson Technology Limited will not seek to recoup the costs of your study.
Yes. The Dyson Institute holds full taught degree awarding powers. This, and regular external peer review of our programmes mean that our degrees are recognised as equivalent to any other high-quality university in the UK.
Upon graduation, individuals are required to complete a minimum of two years full-time employment with Dyson Technology Limited. This reflects the purpose of the Institute, to produce a new generation of talented individuals that can go on to shape the future of the Dyson business. If a graduate decides to leave earlier than this, a repayment of £60,000 is required to contribute towards the costs invested in the individual’s education. This cost includes investments such as academic tuition, workplace coaching and mentoring, and course specific costs associated with teaching and learning.
At the Dyson Institute, we believe our Undergraduate Engineers are the engineering leaders of the future. Across the four years of the programme, Dyson makes a significant investment in time and financial resources to cover the individual’s tuition, space and facilities, learning resources, salary whilst studying, student support, workplace supervision and assessment, and additional training costs. £60,000 recognising some of this investment over the 4 years of the programme.
Dyson can, in certain circumstances, agree to accept a shorter period of notice on a fully discretional basis. Examples of when that discretion might be exercised include scenarios where your personal circumstances materially change such that you cannot continue working or studying. This may include health difficulties, or caring responsibilities.
Dyson is a global technology company, with roles and opportunities across multiple disciplines and areas of expertise. A small number of graduates from the Dyson Institute have, following their degree, decided to take on professional career roles in Dyson that are unrelated to engineering. The culmination of the skills, knowledge and experiences you will gain from your four-year undergraduate master’s will equip you to take on many roles, including some beyond traditional engineering and we encourage our graduates to be curious and move into roles that they are passionate about. The Institute and Dyson’s Human Resources team will work with you to help shape your career aspirations.
