The Experience Students As Partners Uec

Dyson Institute Student Committee

The Dyson Institute Student Committee (DISC) is our formal student representative body and forms part of the governance structure of the Dyson Institute. The DISC ensures that there’s a student voice at all levels and across the breadth of the student experience. They offer feedback, advice and consultation to the Dyson Institute team on new proposals, projects and initiatives. They're also responsible for leading, organising and facilitating social events and activities.

The DISC enables effective communication across all year groups, and between the Institute team and the student body. Elected student representatives hold positions that reflect key aspects of Institute life, including:

  • Social and Sports
  • Wellbeing and Diversity
  • Academic
  • Workplace
  • Communities

Shaping and developing the experience

We work with our students as partners in shaping the current and future student experience. Our student engagement approach ensures that students are at the heart of decision making at all levels of the Dyson Institute, from day-to-day operational matters, projects and developments to strategic decision-making and governance.

Freedom of speech

The Institute’s Freedom of Speech Code of Practice sets out the principles and procedures that ensure freedom of speech and academic freedom are protected for all members of the Institute’s community. It provides clear guidance for students, staff, and visiting speakers on their rights and responsibilities, outlines the processes for organising speakers, and details how decisions affecting free speech are made in line with statutory duties. The Code confirms that the Institute’s governing body (‘Council’) are required to protect freedom of speech and academic freedom.
