Supporting our students holistically means offering a comprehensive network of support that integrates the academic, workplace and wellbeing aspects of the degree. We offer a range of resources and support surrounding health and wellbeing and information directing you to the right help. Our dedicated team offers personalised advice, guidance and support, helping you take meaningful steps towards improving your health and wellbeing throughout your journey.
Through a series of targeted workshops and initiatives, students engage with important topics including wellbeing, mental health, gender identity, drugs and alcohol awareness, and sexual health. These sessions, delivered in collaboration with the Student Support team, form part of an annual core training aimed at creating a respectful, inclusive, and supportive environment.
By promoting informed decision-making, self-awareness, and a strong sense of community, both the Development Days and Wellbeing Curriculum ensure every student is empowered to fulfil their potential and promotes a respectful, inclusive, and supportive professional environment.
We understand and recognise that balancing studies, work, and life’s other demands can be challenging, which is why our student support service has grown organically with the Institute, designed to help you maximise wellbeing and attain both personal and professional goals.
We have a mental health strategy that has been co-created between staff and students to support mental health and wellbeing in the Institute at every level.
There are a wide range of Dyson employment benefits in place available to support your health and wellbeing, internally and externally, such as the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) and access to private GP services, alongside optional Private Health Insurance. . Our Student Support Team are trained in Mental Health First Aid. Mental Health First Aid training enables our team to recognise the signs of mental health struggles early, offer initial support, and help individuals access the appropriate professional help if needed. This means that students can feel confident knowing there is always someone available to offer support and guidance during difficult times.
The Dyson Institute is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment that supports and celebrates faith and cultural diversity. Multi-faith prayer rooms are available on campus, providing staff and students with dedicated spaces for reflection and worship. We encourage and support the use of these facilities for prayer or quiet contemplation as needed throughout the day.
A range of faith-based clubs and societies offer opportunities for engagement, peer support, and community building. The Student Support Team provides guidance and can connect individuals to specialist services as needed, ensuring every member of our community feels supported and respected in expressing their beliefs
Safeguarding means to protect a person’s health, wellbeing and human rights to enable them to live free from harm, abuse, and neglect. At the Dyson Institute we are committed to creating a safeguarding culture and delivering the highest standards of student welfare and wellbeing. We believe in every individual doing their outmost to protect everyone in the community from harm or abuse, and expect all Dyson employees, partners, and contractors to share this commitment, as we believe that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.
These are some of the things we do to support a safeguarding culture:
In alignment with the new Office for Students E6 requirements on tackling harassment and sexual misconduct, the Institute is committed to upholding the highest standards of prevention, response, and support within our community. We work proactively to ensure a safe working and learning environment free from harassment and sexual misconduct so that all members of the community can enjoy the right to study, live and work. We recognise that harassment and sexual misconduct can have a significant impact on those involved, their supporters, and the wider community and beyond, which is why we work proactively on prevention and response strategies, to create an environment which supports the development of healthy and supportive relationships within our community.
We have a team of specially trained staff, Sexual Violence Liaison Officers (SVLOs) and Safeguarding Officers, who are skilled to support everyone. Our actions keep you at the centre of what we do and we recognise the importance of informed decisions and the support we provide will be determined by the individuals wishes.
Throughout your time studying with us, we encourage and empower our students to foster independence by taking ownership of their learning experience, including communicating with us directly. While we value parental support, we encourage students to contact us directly with any questions or concerns.
